One of six children, Matthew Russell, known as Matt, was born in Paisley in 1936. The son of a shipbuilder, his love and talent for Art were evident from an early age when, at the age of six, one of his paintings was displayed at the Paisley Art Gallery and Museum.
Matt's speciality of Pastel painting is widely regarded as the most difficult medium with which to work, and unlike many artists who simply sketch with Pastel, he has mastered a technique painting with pastel; mixing colours and even applying them with a brush. This has led to his distinctive style enabling him to truly capture the beauty of the Scottish landscape, which he loves. It is this love that has led to his current "Scottish Castles" exhibition, which he hopes to extend to about 50 paintings during the next few years with the intention of staging a major UK tour.
Remote and mysterious, this 14th century ruin stands beside the cold waters of Loch Doon. It was originally constructed on a rocky islet in the Loch itself, but was rebuilt on it's present site after the water level of the loch was raised in the 1930's.
