One of six children, Matthew Russell, known as Matt, was born in Paisley in 1936. The son of a shipbuilder, his love and talent for Art were evident from an early age when, at the age of six, one of his paintings was displayed at the Paisley Art Gallery and Museum.

Matt's speciality of Pastel painting is widely regarded as the most difficult medium with which to work, and unlike many artists who simply sketch with Pastel, he has mastered a technique painting with pastel; mixing colours and even applying them with a brush. This has led to his distinctive style enabling him to truly capture the beauty of the Scottish landscape, which he loves. It is this love that has led to his current "Scottish Castles" exhibition, which he hopes to extend to about 50 paintings during the next few years with the intention of staging a major UK tour.

The ruined Dunollie Castle stands in an elevated position to the north of the town of Oban and is surrounded on three sides by the sea.
